Do Something Different This Weekend

At a loose end this weekend? Got that #Friday feeling?

Got that #Fridayfeeling fancy a #dayout Get yourself down to #Claymills Pumping Station near Burton on Trent.

Claymills Pumping Station is a must see place. it is an excellent example of Victorian engineering at its finest, and has buildings dating back to 1885. It was important in the development of Burton upon Trent during the Victorian age, bringing much needed improvements to local sewerage handling.

Built by Burton on Trent corporation to meet the increasing the rising demand for health and welfare. The engines and buildings were built in 1885, and contain four rotive beam engines, supplied by Gimson and Company of Leicester. There are also a number of small steam engines of the site.

The beam engines were decommissioned in the early 70’s and suffered from neglect, vandalism and metal theft throughout the 80’s until a group of people came together to form a trust with the objective of saving these magnificent giants from the past.

It is now preserved as a museum offering a varied programme of steaming days, talks, guided tours and hands on learning, and is described by English Heritage as ‘the most complete site of its kind in the UK’.

The museum now opens on a weekly basis and runs two of the engines on steam throughout the year.

Claymills Pumping Station is a living credit to the volunteers who freely give their time; protecting the past, so that you may enjoy its future.
